'Still fighting?' Zara's voice taunted. 'Tiresome. There's no point, you know. Nothing awaits you anymore. You're long dead.'

It's how they had held him for so long. Somehow they convinced his family he had been dead. A body changed with blood magic made to look like him, apparently. Caterina had suspected the truth, though, and never given up on him, but the others - they'd had a funeral. Apparently he had a gravestone somewhere.
